The image of the artist who must first destroy before being able to create is one that can be applied without reservation to Ton van Kints. His work is marked by methods that can be called both destructive and constructive in the same breath.

Van Kints saws sheets of wood into simple and separate sections, only to reconstruct them as he found them. At times the lines he saw are straight, but just as often they are curled and decorative. The sections are subsequently stapled together, and the sawcuts sealed.

The panels which result have the air of being torn apart and repaired at the same time.
What remains is a drawing formed from nervous patterns of lines and scars, made by the spoors left in the wood.

Many of the panels are monochromatic, but occasionally Van Kints draws a grid into the image with an electric router. By virtue of the pattern this extra ‘drawing’ introduces, and the differences in colour and physical depth a router cuts brings with it, a more dynamic image emerges.

However, the complexity of the image is always tempered by the legibility of the action.
The simplicity of method and clarity of conception evident in this work increase our surprise at the results. For even more striking than the unexpected richness of possibility and variation, is the work hushed esthetical sense.
Constructions that at first appear simple, even rickety, reveal themselves on closer inspection to be lively and concentrated — even capricious — exchanges between line, colour, material and space.
